NEW PLANNING GRANT AWARDED TO MERCER COUNTY’S OLDE TOWN GROVE CITY FOR ROUTE 208 ARTISAN TRAIL

-Project Promotes Unique Western Pennsylvanian Art Creations and Welcomes Communities and Artists to Participate-

Pittsburgh, Pa.-November 3, 2008- The Pennsylvania Tourism, Film and Economic Development Office has awarded a $5,000 grant to Mercer County’s Olde Town Grove City on behalf of the group working to develop one of Western Pennsylvania’s most charming drives on Route 208. The Artisan Trail is projected to be 75 miles long and extend from the Ohio border through Lawrence, Mercer, Butler, Venango and Clarion counties, offering in-state and out-of-state travelers an exceptional place-based art experience.

The grant was awarded this past September to celebrate, support and promote Pennsylvania Route 208 artisans and handmade products. The diversity of the experience along the trail is one-of-a-kind and the project seeks commitment of additional community and artisan participation to further portray Western Pennsylvania’s rare art creations.

Current participants in the Artisan Trail showcase authentic artistic experiences including art exhibits and cultural events, work of local artists, art galleries, pottery creations and handmade Amish crafts and furniture.

“Mercer County is excited to be part of the development of the Route 208 Artisan Trail,” said Peggy Mazyck, Executive Director of VisitMercerCountyPA. “We feel this effort will expand our ability to attract visitors interested in cultural heritage tourism and
provide increased recognition of the unique art and products created in Western Pennsylvania.”

As the Artisan Trail project develops, a strategic marketing and funding campaign will be implemented. The trail is expected be open year round to travelers and vacationers. To find out more information about Artisan Trail participant VisitMercerCountyPA, log onto www.visitmercercountypa.org
